On Friday 3 February, students in Year 8 and Year 9 discovered more about the wide range of pathways and courses on offer at Stamford and Peterborough Colleges. T-Levels, Diplomas and Apprenticeships were covered, alongside traditional A-Level options and students learned how transferable skills are key for future applications.

Sarah and Julia from Morrisons explained about the wide range of jobs within this sector – not just retail, but logistics, manufacturing and IT too. Morrisons also pay over and above the minimum apprenticeship rate, recognising the requirement to balance work with on-going study.

Rosie from the College was keen to stress how important it is to research all the options and to take time to visit different sites and talk to course tutors to find out what’s right for you, re-enforcing the message that it’s never too early to start thinking about careers.

The school’s Careers Lead, Mrs Taylor provided some useful statistics about destinations and encouraged students to come and speak to her about anything career or work-related. She summarised the differences between apprenticeships and T-levels and talked about linking GCSE subject choices to jobs and courses.

Students asked some brilliant questions, including how to become a ‘taste tester’ and how much a manager is paid!

Morrisons also provided an interesting overview of jobs within their organisation to Year 7 students during an assembly on the same morning.

We would like to extend our thanks to our visitors, to staff who helped supervise the event and to students, who were respectful and listened carefully to the information provided.  Presentations will be uploaded to the school’s website under the Curriculum/Careers section for students who were absent from these lessons.
