Year 10 Employability Skills and World of Work Day

On Tuesday 28 January, Year 10 students took part in a teambuilding /enterprise event, delivered by a team of entrepreneurs from the excellent Bright Futures organisation.

Pupils worked in teams of five and spent the day learning how to be enterprising and developing key employability skills in preparation for their work experience.

Groups explored the concept of wealth creation and how employers determine who to invite to interview by analysing CVs and application letters. Students also took part in two key challenges during the day. They had to design and build an innovative model theme park roller coaster ride, working to a set brief with limited materials and within a set timeframe. Another was to ‘negotiate’ the purchase of materials to design and make a loyalty card holder for Sir Darren Sugar! Students were only able to purchase resources if they presented themselves in a professional well dressed manner, with spotless uniform and within the deadlines set – every team leader rose to the challenge!

Mrs Taylor who co-ordinated the event said: “We have engaged Bright Futures for a number of years and once again we were very impressed with their team of presenters. The materials were excellent and many key points were covered in an interactive and effective way. The activities were also linked to students’ preparation for their work experience and enabled them to learn more about entrepreneurship and how their own unique skills and interests can link to future careers.”

The Bright Futures team work in schools and colleges all over the UK and were keen to stress how creative and respectful students were. The lead presenter said: “We look forward to working with students from The Deepings School who are always polite and have some excellent ideas – this year was no exception and the students are a credit to the school.”
