Regional Cross Country – Chesterfield

On Saturday 7th November, in true autumnal weather, the Deepings School Junior girls team travelled to Chesterfield to take part in the regional championships after finishing second in the district round. The team consisted of Hannah Knight, Lexy Cooper, Penny Woods (year 8), Elesha Foord and Sophie Baskeyfield (year 7).

The skies were dull, the wind biting and the rain lashing down as we travelled the two hour journey. Team spirits on the minibus were high with all the girls excited to be running a new and very challenging course against excellent competition.

Upon arrival, the team headed off to walk the course to prepare themselves for their race. They soon realised that the course was going to be difficult to manoeuvre due to the weather conditions. Hannah Knight finished in 18th with Elesha Foord finishing in 21st. Both superb performances against a very high quality field of competitor’s.

All five girls completed the course albeit covered in mud from head to toe!!! Well done girls on representing the School.

Match report

The U14 and U16 teams faced their first match against Bourne Grammar School. There were plenty of nerves to begin with but the boys soon warmed up and made Bourne Grammar work hard for their win. A huge well done to the U14 boys Basil Johns, Ruben Thompson, Josh Barrett, Louis Groom, Thomas Tapley and the U16 boys Adam Mayman, Ollie Rons, Jakub Brzozowski and Kane Clow.

Particularly well done to Adam for coming back from a disheartening first game to narrowly lose 20-22 and then go on to win his final singles game 21-10. Another special mention goes to Basil for his great teamwork, winning games with Ruben, Josh and Jakub. Kane also impressed by winning a singles and doubles with Ruben.

Overall the U14s lost 7-3 and U16s lost 12-3 but this doesn’t reflect how close the individual games were. With the dedication and motivation the boys showed this can only stand them in good stead for an upcoming tournament, future matches and a return match against Bourne Grammar. As this was the first match of the year, I am extremely pleased and proud of how well the boys performed in both age groups.

Arthur Mellows Village College 2 vs 3 The Deepings School – Match Report (Year7)

Deeping started the game well, creating numerous chances on goal without gaining the advantage in the game. The home side started to come back into the game after this, hitting the bar and having a couple of shots on goal which were well saved by James Roberts in the Deeping goal. The first goal of the game came Deeping’s way just before the half time whistle, a good run and cross was coolly slotted into the goal to make the score line 1-0 to Deeping.

Just after half time, Deeping furthered their lead with a shot at goal that was parried by the goalkeeper and then finished on the rebound to make the score line 2-0. After this, Arthur Mellows started to apply pressure, having large periods of play in the Deeping half, however resolute and determined defending was keeping the score line the same. Midway through the second half, Deeping were awarded a free kick in a wide area which was delivered into a dangerous area, resulting in a deflection from an Arthur Mellows defender which diverted the ball into his own net, 3-0 to Deeping.

During the last 10 minutes Arthur Mellows managed to crawl their way back into the game with two well worked team goals, leaving the Deeping defence unable to keep out their opposition. However, the away side (Deeping) were able to ground out the last couple of minutes of the game to claim a well-deserved victory which was full of hard work, commitment and passion. Well done to all of those who were involved.
