Oakham Athletics - 15/6/15

The sun was shining on our last trip this season to Oakham. A full meet took place and Deepings entered two athletes per event in both year 7 girls and boys and year 8 girls and boys. For some students it was the first time they had competed in the Hurdles and Discus events. Stamford School, Oakham School, Catmose College, Witham Hall, Lincoln Minster, Stamford High School all entered strong teams into the competition.

Briony Garner, Hannah Knight, Megan Williams, Victoria Bell, Alexandra Cooper and Faith Horner made up the year 7 girls team with some fantastic individual performances. Team spirit was high amongst the girls and they finished the competition in 5th place.

Oskar Storti, Joshua Raven, Oli Welch, Tom Welch and Ben Asplin all worked extremely hard in each of their events with Josh and Ben both making their debut performance for the school. Well done boys, some personal best achieved and self confidence gained.

The year 8 girls team consisted of Chloe Jones, Hannah Donaldson, Rebecca Groves, Phoebe Cardell, Natasha Fox, Naomi Brown and Lauren McDonald. The girls finished in 5th place only ten points behind 4th. Training had paid off for the girls and this was evident in their performances.

Finishing in 4th place, just 6 points behind 3rd was the year 8 boys team. Sam Jacklin, Adam Blades, Lewis Toynton, Rory White, Ryan Burton, Connor Nottingham, Ethan Martin, Ethan Russell, James Marsh and Will Abbott all produced some fantastic results on the night. Sam Jacklin performed well in Hurdles, 400m, Shot and 4x100m relay. Lewis Toynton made his first appearance of 2015 in High Jump finishing in second place, jumping 1.55m. The performance of the competition goes to Ethan Martin who competed in the 400m, 800m and 1500m and the 4x100m relay.

Well done to all who took part and I look forward to seeing you next season. The Oakham competitions have been a huge success over all and our students truly have dared to excel.

The year 8 rounders team faced tough opposition in their game against Stamford Welland Academy. With only 8 players the team rallied together and produced an outstanding performance both in the field and with the bat.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, the girls raced to a total of 8 rounders from their 25 balls. Some superb batting from Sammie Pinder and Beth Horder found the gaps in the field leaving Deeping with an excellent total to defend. In reply, Stamford Welland scored 4 rounders. Some quality bowling by Emily Bates and great energy in the field from Lauren McDonald and Emily McCann saw Deeping take a solid lead into the second innings.

Sammie Pinder once again stepped up and scored 4 rounders in the second innings with Rebecca Groves and Hannah Donaldson chipping in with 2 each. Deeping ended the second innings with a total of 16 ½  rounders. Stamford Welland put up a good fight scoring a further 7 rounders to end their innings on 11.

Special mention to the captain on the night Eleanor Schofield for her cat like fielding; stopping numerous rounders with some handy footwork - unorthodox but successful!

The game ended with Deeping winning with a score of 16 and ½ to 11. A big well done to the girls for an outstanding performance.
