SUBJECT VISION

To engage and inspire pupils to learn a variety of musical skills and knowledge which are transferable.

The aim of the KS3 curriculum is to deepen and extend the pupils’ musical interests and skills music.

Engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians.  Increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.  Develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination.

 We aim for the curriculum to include the following:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music from a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of famous composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing, and to use their voices to create and compose music on their own and with others.
  • Have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, and use music technology appropriately.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including a knowledge of pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre etc.

Through GCSE we aim for the pupils to form personal and meaningful relationships with music through the development of musical knowledge, understanding and skills.  Perform, compose and appraise.  Engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts. Develop an understanding of the place of music in different cultures and contexts.  Reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities.  Develop musical fluency.  Ensure access to further study of music at AS and A level.

GCSE MUSIC BOARD: AQA 

Performing 40% External Assessment – required to perform two different pieces: one Individual performance and one Group performance.

Composing 40% Internal and External Assessment – One composition exploring Areas of study and one composition link to Popular music.

Listening and Appraising 20%- External Assessment – Listening exam based on the five Areas of study.

A-LEVEL MUSIC BOARD:  WJEC

Appraising 20% External Assessment – Set Works and Aural Perception

A2 Performing 20% External Assessment

Composing 15% Internal Assessment

Appraising 15 % external Assessment – Part 1 20th/ 21st Century music. Part 2 analyses of set works.
