On Sunday 14th January 3 teams took part in stage 1 of an international competition called the first Lego League. Each team completed several challenges

Project Presentation – the team had to write and present a project on a theme. This year they had to promote their hobbies/interests to other people.

Core Values – the team had to demonstrate teamwork skills throughout the day to the judges.

Robot Game – Since September the teams have been building and coding a Lego Mindstorms robot to complete as many missions as the can in 2.5 minutes on the Masterpiece Lego board.

Robot Design – the team had to demonstrate and present their robot to a panel of professional engineers from Park Air Systems.

The overall theme “Masterpiece” invited the pupils to think creatively about their hobbies and interests. The gameboard focused on how Masterpieces are displayed and produced eg, Filming a Movie, Watching a rock concert, Watching a theatre production. These are a few examples of missions that the students had to solve by programming and autonomous Lego Mindstorms Robot.

The day was full of trials and tribulation and each team was very successful in achieving wins in several of the above categories.

At the end of the day, Da Valuable Vinci’s, a team comprising of Harry B(Y7) James W(Y8) Logan M(Y8), Jack B(Y8) Jack M(Y8) and Lewis W(Y10) were crowned overall champions and will now travel to Harrogate in April to represent the school and the region in the UK National Final. At this event there will be around 70-80 teams from across the country, trying to win the title of UK champion.
